Nurturing the state’s next generation of environmental workers has become increasingly important in order to fill jobs needed for Hawaii’s rapidly growing green sector, a responsibility that Kupu has incorporated into its mission.

The local nonprofit teaches sustainability to Hawaii’s youth through hands-on service programs and internship opportunities. Kupu — the name means to sprout or grow in the Hawaiian language — formed in 2007, but traces its roots to 2001 when the program was part of the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.
